Considering A Career As A Medical Administrative Specialist?

November 23rd, 2015 / By Eastern College

The face of Canadian medical administration is changing. Doctors are in short supply and nurses are taking on leadership roles to coordinate personal support workers. All of them are overworked, too. It’s a far cry from our medical system of 40 years ago, to be sure. We need mechanisms in place at every medical facility to coordinate these roles on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

That’s why Eastern College offers the Medical Administrative Specialist program. Canada needs people who can organize medical staff as efficiently as possible. Doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and personal support workers spend their days running between patients to diagnose, treat, and educate their patients. They can’t operate at 100% capacity without medical administrative specialists doing their jobs behind the scenes.

You’ll learn quite a bit in preparation for your first medical administrative job. The program begins with office efficiency so that you can increase your raw productivity in a given day. Having the best ideas in the world won’t help if you can’t organize and communicate them in a timely manner!

The program covers the basics first; word processing, spreadsheets, slideshow presentations, and database management. This includes software for Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. You’ll be more efficient than traditional college graduates because you’ll be trained in the hard skills that count.

Medical administrators also need to know how to type efficiently, which is why you’ll get a structured course on keyboarding built right into the whole program. You’ll learn how to type like a pro with access to typing software that gives you instant feedback on your skills. You’ll come out of the gates swinging, ready for a new career, and possess the skills to blow other candidates out of the water with your efficiency.

Then students move into the specialized medical knowledge that lets them communicate with other medical staff. They learn medical anatomy, office practices and assistance roles, medical transcription, and all of the terminology related to those units. You won’t be administering flu shots to sick patients, but you’ll understand exactly what patients need, what ails them, and how to communicate those things to doctors and nurses.

The course then returns to other crucial office skills that will give you that extra edge over any competition that might rival you for that next medical administrative position. Learn how to format documents according to hospital or clinic guidelines, how to apply mathematical solutions to medical settings, and the basics of bookkeeping. You’ll also learn about professional communications—which is still incredibly important in places as busy as hospitals. You’ll be interfacing with clients, patients, and medical staff for most of your day.

We want to hear from you if you want to help people for a living. Canada is in need of experienced medical administrators, and that need will only become greater as our population ages even further. Call us at Eastern College to discover when you can start training for your next job in the medical world. We might have classes starting sooner than you think!
