What To Expect In The Veterinarian Program

August 14th, 2015 / By Eastern College

Almost everyone loves animals, but how do you go about helping them in the most effective way? Eastern College trains veterinary assistants of various kinds to make sure that our companions receive the full care that they deserve. What if you could jump into the operating room in just a year or less?

Eastern prepares you to follow your passion with the professional skills to get you there. It’s a no-nonsense kind of education that gets you from point A to B as effectively as possible. You’ll learn how to operate within and outside of the operating room with lessons in field-relevant software, small animal nutrition, veterinary office procedures, bookkeeping, and career planning.

There are two streams in the veterinary program rather than just one, and the right one for you depends on the way that you want to help out. You can train for veterinarian administration, or you can train to be a hands-on assistant in the operating room. Deciding to work in “on the field” or in the control room is up to you.

The hands-on veterinary assistant program teaches you about breeds of common domestic pets, nutrition for small animals, and the most appropriate kinds of medicine for small animals. Both programs teach students the appropriate veterinarian terminology to operate like a professional inside and outside of an office.

You will also gain invaluable experience through a work placement, which will give you the hands-on experience that you need to land a job right out of school. Administrative veterinarian assistants spend six weeks in a professional environment, and the lab assistants spend eight weeks gaining valuable experience to place at the top of your résumé. You’ll come out of the gates swinging and ready to start the healing process. The beauty of the system is that the program trains you for what you need to know in theory and practice.

You’ll also receive training in business communication, which will allow you to communicate complex ideas to people who just don’t know anything about medicine or animal care. The art of effective communication lies in explaining ideas from a familiar point of reference for non-experts with sensitivity for the pain that the other person might be experiencing.

Eastern imbues a sense of professional and personal empathy into its graduates. Practicing empathy has become a major component of education for human medicine in recent years to treat widespread empathy and emotional disconnection, yet it is every bit as important to the field of veterinary science. People require empathy to get through long nights with their furry companions every bit as much as the companions themselves need it.

Get in touch with us at Eastern College to set your career on a path in which you touch the lives of people and their pets on a daily basis. There are more than enough small animals out there that need your help, and the veterinarians can’t treat all of them alone. Take a step toward your future.
